Time runs out for the Owls.

This was a game that didn't disappoint and certainly lived up to the hype surrounding it, palace and Sheffield Wednesday put on a cracker. The reaction from the seasoned Shaun Derry epitomised exactly what this game meant to the players and fans as he was reduced to tears of joy as the referee blew the whistle on not only the game, but also Sheffield Wednesday's spell in the Championship. Indeed, the majority of the bumper crowd in Hillsborough left disappointed from the heartbreaking result, but also proud of the positivity their side showed at times through the pace of Jermaine Johnson and the inspiration from Darren Purse. But they came up short to a Palace team who only needed a point to secure their status as a Championship team for another season.Goals from target man Alan Lee and the prolific Darren Ambrose were enough to doom Sheffield Wednesday back to the 3rd tier of English football, a goal from Darren Purse came in the 87th minute but it proved too little to late for the Owls. So what now for both sides? Crystal Palace will hope that this can inject some life back into the club and some money so they can progress on in the Championship next season whiles hoping for a light in what has been a very dull affair off the pitch this year. The club will hope that the passion displayed in today's game can convince any potential buyers that they are a club worth investing in. The Owls on the other hand will need to re-group and assess over the summer which way they now want to go in order to progress. Alan Irvine is a highly experienced manager and has a proven track record despite this blip in his managerial career. With the likelihood of players such as Marcus Tudgay, Luke Varney and Jermaine Johnson being sought after from other clubs, Wednesday will need to ensure to keep the bulk of the team intact and ready for a tough yet optimistic season in league 1. With the passion that Irvines side displayed today, it bodes well for next year when they will need to dig deep on occasions if they are to stand any chance of returning to the Championship.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and it would be much appreciated if you left a comment on the article and also where you see the two clubs going in the future.

  3. Very informative and balanced article. This was a must win game for Palace mainly because going down may have seen us going out of business. Wednesday are a massive club, who may find life hard in League 1...ala Leeds United and The Clowns (Charlton). But I do wish them the best of luck

  4. Pass my regards on to Brian Laws when you see him! He has done some sterling work this season for 2 clubs. All we need is Grayson or Zola to get ousted and bring Brian in to work some magic!

  5. An interesting review of the game Liam,I think most neutrals & obviously Palace fans would have enjoyed watching the match.

I don't think the future is too bright for either club as Palace have well publicised financial troubles & Wednesday still have a large debt to deal with.

I've never been much of a fan of Ref Mike Dean but I thought his decision to reduce Wednesday to 10 men by sending a player off the field to get a bit of blood wiped off his eyebrow could have been better timed.
When you are defending a corner it's not a good time to be put at a numerical disadvantage.

If I hadn't seen the match I would have assumed that Palace had one the match 2-1 based on your report. Your reference to the goals:-

" Goals from target man Alan Lee and the prolific Darren Ambrose were enough to doom Sheffield Wednesday back to the 3rd tier of English football, a goal from Darren Purse came in the 87th minute but it proved too little to late for the Owls".

gives us no indication that Leon Clarke was on target for Wednesday in the first half.
By the way, he then kicked an advertising board while celebrating his goal which broke his toe & he played no further part in the match.

Good luck with the writing & keep enjoying your football.

    Best Wishes,

    DG.

    Nice article.

Where do they go - where do we go ??
In a way I'd rather be a fan of Wed at present as they APPEAR to be financially better off (just !!)
But .. team,s have to go down and up.

The blood incident - yes - I only realised at the replay of the corner what had happened !!!

Sheffield Wednesday are in a better position financially than Crystal Palace. We have a large debt but are able to pay the interest on it! If it wasn't for this long term debt we would be making a small profit.
We needed to win this match and we only drew so we're now relegated but I believe we'll soon go up again. I apologise on behalf of the stupid fans who went on to the pitch at the end of the game; we're normally a well-behaved club but this was a highly-charged match and emotions were running high. (I, too, would have thought from your article that Palace won 2 - 1 as you didn't mention our second goal.)

  8. Just a small point, but Palace were paying the interest on the debt, but the hedge fund chose to call it in anyway, which could happen to any club in the league, with much the same result.

And despite the 'cup final' effect, Owls were not relegated for failing to beat Palace on the last day of the season.
